THE LISTENOCRACY FUND

Our plan from the beginning was to function as a business, not a nonprofit .,. because we wanted to find out if we could add real value without relying on fundraising to fill the gaps, or cover our mistakes.

So, Humane Resources has been bootstrappy from the start … low operating costs … no debt … no salaries. Revenues generated by 3Practice Circle events and Referee Training, and, later, 3Q Check-in training have gone first to make sure the lights stay on and our non-employee trainers get paid (not a lot but on time) … From time to time, when there’s cash on hand, we take a modest draw. When we comp training seats for tiny organizations or social entrepreneurs who can’t afford to pay, it comes out of our pockets.

We’re good with all that. The plan is working. We’ve trained nearly 300 3Practice Circle Referees. Beyond community organizers and activists, we’ve trained a bunch of institutional and organizational leaders … nearly 50 Referees in Salvation Army units in the US and Canada … more than a dozen in higher education … a couple of dozen in religious organizations (some of which aren’t really on speaking terms with each other outside of 3Practice Circles — at least, not yet) … coming up on three dozen professionals in the International Ombuds Association … two dozen in Atlanta, whose training was jointly funded by the United Methodist Church and The Carter Center. Every month, there are 25-to-30 open Zoom Circles and in-person Circles than we can count led by organizational and institutional Referees.

It’s a good trend line. We’re grateful.

Along the way, a number of folks offered small gifts to express their appreciation, even though there was no tax benefit to them. Some of those folks, and a few others besides, said they wished there were a way to help more substantially.

Now there is. Meet Listenocracy.

Listenocracy is a not-for-profit, chartered to take 3Practice Circles and 3Q Check-in training to folks who can’t afford to pay for our tools, but know exactly what they’d do with them if they could.

The US Internal Revenue Servce granted nonprofit status to Listenocracy

“…to extend the benefits of training, certifying, and developing 3Practice Circle Referees & Trainers; and

training, certifying, and developing 3Q Check-in Leaders & Trainers; and

developing Off the Map events, training, and think tank activities (Off the Map is the platform for our occasional initiatives aimed at resourcing nonprofit leaders); to benefit

individuals, organizations, communities, and cultural and language groups that Humane Resources LLC may not otherwise have the resources to reach.”

As we see a path for Humane Resources to help people who help people in the mainstream of civic, institutional, business, religious, government, and organizational spaces, we also see a need to provide training and support at the economic margins of all those domains. We set up Listenocracy — and the IRS granted nonprofit status — so people and organizations can make tax-deductible grants and gifts for the common good. Which enables us to do more than we can do out of our own pockets.
